The Zone Grise (Grey Area) Project : Innovating Workplace Discrimination Training

Zone Grise stands out for its innovative approach, integrating virtual reality (VR) into workplace discrimination awareness training, an underutilized method. Unlike traditional training formats, such as informational videos that encourage passive learning, this immersive experience actively engages participants, allowing them to feel the impact of discrimination in a safe and judgment-free environment.

As a nonprofit with limited resources, CIME faced several challenges. A key objective was to market the immersive workshop to businesses, universities, and professional institutions, while reaching audiences less engaged in these discussions; particularly men in male-dominated industries. The training had to be both compelling and impactful, capable of capturing attention despite budget constraints and convincing decision-makers of its value.

To achieve this, 360° videos were produced, recreating realistic workplace and academic scenarios. With professional actors, these capsules depict subtle discrimination, placing the VR user in the role of an active witness. This first-person perspective fosters deep awareness by allowing participants to directly experience discomfort and its consequences. The interactive nature of VR further enhances engagement, as users can explore different angles of the scene, increasing their understanding of underlying social dynamics.

Now equipped with a unique tool, CIME is better positioned to attract organizations to this innovative training. While still in its early stages, the program is already prompting professionals to reflect on their behaviors, receiving positive feedback. Recognizing that real change takes time, CIME has also developed a follow-up tool to help companies track progress and sustain long-term impact.
